Christopher Hoar was born in Bideford, Devon on 23 May 1839. He entered the Royal Navy in 1854 as a Boy 2nd Class, being promoted Ordinary Seaman in 1857, Able Seaman in 1859 and Able Seaman (Seaman Gunner) in 1864; attaining the ranks of Quartermaster in 1872 and Petty Officer 1st Class in 1873. Gaining three Good Conduct Badges, he was pensioned in 1875. Sold with copied service details.
