William Gadenne was born at Islington, London and enlisted in ther 2nd Dragoons in November 1889, aged 14 years. Appointed a Bandsman in June 1893 and a Trumpeter in November 1896, he witnessed active service out in South Africa from November 1899 until the end of hostilities, and was discharged to the Army Reserve shortly thereafter.
