William Lahey enlisted in the 6th Dragoons in January 1891, aged 14 years, after attending the Duke of York’s Royal Military School. He subsequently witnessed active service out in South Africa from October 1899 until the end of hostilities and was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 29 July 1902 refers). Lahey died of disease at Mhow in June 1911 while serving in the rank of Corporal.
