Henry Thomas Inkster was born at Stratford, Essex and enlisted in the Royal Scots Greys in February 1882, aged 14 years. Gaining steady advancement over the next fifteen years, he was appointed Sergeant-Trumpeter in August 1897 and witnessed active service out in South Africa from November 1899 to July 1900, during the course of which he was wounded by a gunshot at Driefontein on 10 March 1900.
