Charles Roach was born in London and enlisted in the 20th Hussars in November 1874, aged 14 years. Appointed a Trumpeter in December 1877, he served in Egypt and the Sudan between September 1884 and March 1887, participating in the Gordon Relief Expedition and the Battle of Ginnis. Roach was discharged in August 1888 shortly after his return to the U.K.
