Three: Trumpet-Major J. Milton, 10th Hussars

Military General Service 1793-1814, 3 clasps, Vittoria, Orthes, Toulouse (Trumpet Major, 10th Hussars); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., large letter reverse (Trumpet Major, 10th Hussars, 1842), old steel clip and bar suspension; Prince of Wales’s Own 10th Royal Hussars Regimental Medal, silver, the reverse engraved around the central figure of a mounted cavalryman, and within the outer wreath, ‘Presented to T.M. J. Milton by his Brother Non-Comd. Offrs. as a Mark of Esteem, 1842’, fitted with integral hinged-bar suspension, the first two with refixed suspension and all showing signs of having been in circular mounts, edge bruising, otherwise generally very fine and rare (3) £2500-3000

John Milton was born in Manchester and enlisted in the 10th Hussars in August 1809, aged 17 years. In his subsequent career of 32 years with the Colours, he served in the Peninsula and France 1813-14, including the Battles of Vittoria, Orthes and Toulouse, and in Portugal 1827-28, his service record noting that he was wounded at Morales. Milton was advanced to Trumpeter in October 1820, Trumpet-Major as Sergeant in July 1824 and Trumpet-Major in January 1829. Discharged in Ireland in November 1842, as a result of assorted injuries mainly obtained via horses, he received his Regimental Medal in the same year, one of just six examples recorded by Balmer (R63).
