James William Hayter was born at Aldershot, Hampshire and enlisted in the 10th Hussars in May 1882, aged 14 years. Appointed a Trumpeter in June 1884, he exchanged to the rank of Bandsman in August 1887. By the time he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in May 1902, he had attained the rank of (Band) Sergeant, and, following a period of attachment to the 7th Hussars, was discharged in November 1904. He never went overseas.
