Thomas Jacques was born in Kensington, London and enlisted in the 9th Lancers in November 1863, aged 14 years. Appointed a Trumpeter in July 1865, and advanced to Trumpet-Major in October 1878, he witnessed active service in the Second Afghan War 1879-80 and was awarded the Medal with clasps for “Kabul” and “Kandahar”, and the Star. Having reverted to the rank of Trumpeter, Jacques was actually discharged in the rank of Sergeant-Trumpeter in May 1886, in which year he was also awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal. He was still claiming his pension in the mid-1920s.
