Sydney (Benjamin) Waterer was born at Trowbridge, Wiltshire and enlisted in the Royal Scots Greys in August 1894, aged 16 years. Between then and witnessing active service in South Africa, he held the appointments of Bandsman and Trumpeter, but on both occasions reverted to the rank of Private following short terms of imprisonment for misdemeanours unknown. In South Africa, where he served from November 1899 to November 1900, he was wounded in the action at Rietvlei on 19 October of the latter year, and won entitlement to the above described Medal and clasps. Waterer was discharged back home in Edinburgh in April 1901, as a consequence of being found medically unfit for further service.
