Alfred Loveday, who was born at Colchester, Essex, enlisted in the 5th Lancers in May 1876, aged 20 years, having already served for several years as a Drummer in the 41st Foot. He subsequently witnessed active service as a Trumpeter in the 5th Lancers in the Sudan between February and June 1885, and was discharged in May 1888, when his character was described as being ‘Indifferent - frequently absent without leave.’
