Eight: Lieutenant and Senior Commissioned Boatswain E. Renyard, Royal Navy

1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Africa Star; Pacific Star; War Medal 1939-45; Korea 1950-53
(Sen. Cd. B., R.N.); U.N. Korea; Coronation 1953, good very fine (8) £200-250

Ernest Renyard, who was appointed a Boatswain in October 1936, served aboard the battleship H.M.S. Nelson from the outbreak of hostilities in September 1939 until October 1943, and aboard the Howe, another battleship and onetime the flagship of Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser, from the latter month until the end of the War.

Both commissions were of an active nature, resulting in several Battle Honours, not least that for “Malta Convoys 1941-42” to the Nelson, whose operations included the famous “Halberd” and “Pedestal” convoys - in the former she was seriously damaged by a torpedo and in the latter noted for her spectacular anti-aircraft barrages amidst frequent near-misses that rocked her mighty keel. Subsequently, in the Howe, as part of the Pacific Fleet, Renyard would have seen action off Okinawa during the landings there in 1945.

Advanced to Commissioned Boatswain in 1946, and to Senior Commissioned Boatswain in 1949, he witnessed further active service aboard the aircraft carrier Triumph off Korea in 1950 - for a full account of the Triumph’s activities between June and September 1950, including her participation in the Inchon landings and numerous operations carried out by her Seafires from 800 and 827 Squadrons, F.A.A., see John Lansdown’s history, With the Carriers in Korea 1950-1953. Renyard was finally placed on the Retired List as a Lieutenant (S.D.) at the end of the decade.
