Edward Stringer was mentioned in despatches for his services aboard H.M.S. Franklin during minesweeping operations off Normandy in June 1944 (Seedie’s and London Gazette 27 February 1945 refer).

Born at Chester-le-Street, Durham in May 1910, Stringer entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in February 1926. A Petty Officer by the outbreak of hostilities in September 1939, he joined the Franklin in March 1940 and served aboard her for the remainder of the War, a commission that also witnessed him receiving his L.S. & G.C. Medal in May 1943. Appointed a Chief Electrician in December 1946, he was finally pensioned ashore in June 1950.

Sold with a quantity of original documentation and four portrait photographs, the former including the recipient’s M.I.D. certificate and Certificate of Service.
