Excellent), impressed naming, this last with (slack) refixed suspension and damage to obverse fields as a result of old brooch-mounting, and the second with contact marks, thus good fine, the first very fine (3) £100-150

Charles William Chipp was born at Portsea, Hampshire in April 1949, the son of a Sergeant in the Royal Marine Artillery, and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in January 1864. Having attained the rank of Captain of the Forecastle (Petty Officer 1st Class) in March 1875, he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in May 1877, but does not appear to have witnessed any active service. Appointed a Gunner, R.N. in April 1878, and a Chief Gunner in December 1897, Chipp became one of the first in this rank to gain advancement to Lieutenant in April 1903, shortly before his retirement. Recalled as late as April 1916, and now in the rank of Lieutenant-Commander (Retired), he was borne on the books of the Ceto as ‘additional for mail duties at Ramsgate’, which services qualified him for his single British War Medal 1914-20. Chipp was demobilised in July 1919 and died at Ramsgate in October 1930, aged 81 years.
