John Bertie Triggs, a native of Stoke Damerell, Devon, who was born in April 1893, entered the Royal Navy as a “hostilities only” man in September 1914. In January 1917, however, while serving in the base ship for H.M.S. Europa, he signed-on for 12 years continuous service backdated to his original entry in 1914.
