John Edward Martell was born at Porchester, Hampshire in July 1883 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in December 1900. A Leading Seaman based at the gunnery establishment H.M.S. Excellent on the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, he joined the ship’s company of the cruiser Inconstant in the December following, and served aboard her for the remainder of the War, a period that witnessed her participation in the Battle of Jutland. Martell, who was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in August 1916, was pensioned ashore in July 1923, when he enrolled in the Royal Fleet Reserve.
