John James Carson was born at Elphia, Co. Roscommon in May 1883 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in January 1900. Soon after the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, he was posted to the receiving ship Colleen at Queenstown in the rate of Quarter-Master in the Permanent Cruiser Service of the Coast Guard, and he remained so employed until early 1919, being borne on the books of the Thrush and latterly, from April 1915, one of Colleen’s tenders, the Argon. By then a Chief Petty Officer, Carson was advanced to 2nd Mate, R.N., in June 1922, in which capacity he probably served until his retirement.
