James M. Briggs was born in Portsmouth in November 1848 and entered the Royal Navy as a Shipwright in July 1870. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in August 1880, but not having witnessed any active service, he was pensioned ashore as a Divisional Carpenter in August 1890.

William T. Briggs was born at Southsea in April 1854, a brother of James and a future son-in-law to Gunner R. T. Graham, R.N. (see Lot 2), and entered the Royal Navy as a Ship’s Steward Boy in January 1873. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in April 1882, but not having witnessed any active service, he was invalided and pensioned ashore as a Ship’s Steward 1st Class in June 1888.

William Thomas Briggs was born at Southsea in May 1878, the son of the aforementioned W. T. Briggs, a nephew to James and a grandson to Gunner R.T. Graham, R.N., and entered the Royal Navy as Carpenters Crew in August 1898. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal while serving aboard H.M.S. Zealandia in August 1913, he went on to witness active service in the same battleship from the outbreak of hostilities until September 1917, when he came ashore as a Chief Shipwright to Victory II. Briggs ended the War with an appointment in the Achilles and was demobilised in June 1921.
