Harry Excellent Turner was born at Deal, Kent in March 1878 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in July 1893. He subsequently witnessed active service aboard H.M.S. Pearl off South Africa during the extended period of qualification for the Queen’s South Africa Medal in 1902 and was advanced to Petty Officer Telegraphist in October 1907. During the Great War he served aboard the battleship Conqueror from August 1914 until December 1916, including the Battle of Jutland, and aboard the depot ship Mars at Invergordon from the latter date until June 1918, when he was advanced to Acting Warrant Telegraphist. Turner, who was also awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in March 1914, was pensioned ashore in March 1919.
