Bonaventure); 1914-15 Star (121527 Ptr. 1, R.N. ); British War and Victory Medals (121527 Ptr. 1, R.N.); Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (Painter 1st Cl., H.M.S. Lion), impressed naming, the last with slightly slack suspension, contact marks and edge bruising, about very fine and better (6) £350-400

John Trenaman was born at St. Budeaux, Cornwall in February 1862 and entered the Royal Navy as a Painter 2nd Class in November 1882. He subsequently witnessed stints of active service in H.M.S. Boadicea during the Witu operations of 1890, and aboard the Bonaventure off China during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, and received his Medal for the latter campaign from the hands of King Edward VII at a special ceremony held at the Royal Naval Barracks, Devonport on 8 March 1902. Trenaman, who had been awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in December 1894 and was pensioned ashore in November 1902, was recalled in the Great War and joined the battleship Illustrious in August 1914. He was, however, demobilised early on, aged 54 years, in September 1916.
