Robert Woolcott was born in Stepney, London in July 1856 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in October 1872. Subsequently present in the Egypt operations of 1882, as a Yeoman of Signals in H.M.S. Alexandra, including the bombardment of Alexandria, he was pensioned ashore in July 1899; his service papers do not reveal the date of award of his L.S. & G.C. Medal, but it is entirely as issued.
