, dated reverse, no clasp (Ch. Qr. Mr., H.M.S. Orion), single initial ‘J.’; Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (Qr. Mr., H.M.S. Wolverine), engraved naming; Khedive’s Star 1882, contact marks and edge bruising, about very fine or better (3) £160-180

John Moore Mars was born at Bangor, Co. Down in May 1848 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in February 1863. Advanced to Quarter-Master (Petty Officer 1st Class) in May 1875, he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in October of the following year and was confirmed in the rate of Chief Petty Officer in April 1882, on the eve of his participation in the Egypt operations. Mars was pensioned ashore in July 1886, but rejoined as a Petty Officer 1st Class (Pensioner) in December 1903, finally returning ashore in July 1908, at his own request, aged 60 years.
