A fine posthumous King’s Commendation, Lloyd’s War Medal for Bravery at Sea group of five awarded to Radio Officer E. Sturdy, Merchant Navy, who remained at his post and went down with his torpedoed ship, the S.S. “Denpark”, in June 1942

1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Africa Star, clasp, North Africa 1942-43; War Medal 1939-45, M.I.D. oak leaf; LLoyd’s War Medal for Bravery at Sea (Radio Officer Ernest Sturdy, S.S. “Denpark”, 12th May 1942), in its fitted case of issue, extremely fine (5) £1800-2200

Sold with a quantity of original documentation, comprising King’s Commendation certificate, and related Admiralty letter of notification addressed to the recipient’s father, also dated 10 November 1942; Buckingham Palace condolence message; Lloyd’s letter of notification for the War Medal for Bravery at Sea, dated 24 May 1943; together with a large card-mounted portrait photograph in uniform, and a small “Snapshots” photograph album with pictures of the recipient and his family, and ending, poignantly, with inserted copies of the above described correspondence; and an M.I.D. certificate appertaining to the recipient’s brother, Corporal N. L. Sturdy, R.A.O.C., dated 4 April 1946, with two or three pencil drawings by the same.
