A Second World War M.B.E. group of five to Warrant Officer J. W. Burrell, Royal Air Force

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, M.B.E. (Military) Member’s 2nd type breast badge; 1939-45 Star; Defence and War Medals; Royal Air Force L.S.& G.C., G.V.R. (344537 Sgt., R.A.F.) nearly extremely fine (5) £120-160

M.B.E. London Gazette 1 January 1946. The recommendation states:

'Since joining this (R.A.F. Officers) School, on its formation Warrant Officer Burrell has been employed in training officers and officer cadets and has been largely responsible for all their drill and outdoor training. He has also been responsible for the training of inexperienced non-commissioned officers, many of whom, having been posted direct to the School after initial courses of instruction, required further training to bring them up to the high standard demanded by the School. In this aspect of his duties Warrant Officer Burrell has displayed unfailing tact and patience and has done much to foster the excellent team spirit which has always existed among the instructional staff. In addition, while Warrant Officer Burrell has been employed in the School Headquarters for the past two years he has been responsible for the discipline of the permanent staff and has proved himself invaluable in assisting with the airmen's domestic problems. He has taken an active interest in the field of welfare and has worked unceasingly in the organisation of recreational facilities to which he has constantly devoted many of his off-duty hours. His loyalty and devotion to duty have been untiring.'
