Five: Sergeant K. C. W. Howells, King’s Shropshire Light Infantry

Kenneth ‘Ken’ ‘Hooty’ Howells was the eldest son of Major K. Howells, K.S.L.I. He enlisted into the K.S.L.I. as a Boy in 1949 and served with the 1st Battalion K.S.L.I. 1949-71 in Hong Kong, Korea, Germany, Kenya, Malaysia and England. During his service with the regiment, Howells served successively with the Regimental Band, a Rifle Company, the anti-tank platoon and as a Special Recruiter in Shrewsbury. He was awarded his L.S.& G.C. in 1968 - one of the first to be awarded to the ‘Light Infantry’ and was discharged in 1971 as a Sergeant. Employed then by Securicor, he retained his links with the Army as a Sergeant Instructor with the Harlescott Detachment of the Shropshire Army Cadet Force. He died suddenly in 1983.
