John Cathmoir Coullie, who was born in Dundee, Scotland, had previously served in the Black Watch prior to enlisting in the South African Forces at Potchefstroom in January 1916. Advanced to Corporal soon after arriving in France, he was killed in action - missing, presumed dead - on 17 April 1918, while serving in the 4th South African Infantry on Wytschaete Ridge in the Vierstraat line, between La Polka, just east of Kemmel village, and Desinet Farm.
