Arthur Matthews was born at Rotherhithe, Kent and lived at Whitechapel, Middlesex. He was killed in action in France and Flanders on 14 November 1916, whilst serving with the 13th Battalion, Rifle Brigade. He is buried at Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont Hamel, France.
