Three: Corporal H. H. Gadd, Royal Artillery

1914 Star (67765 Gnr., R.F.A.); British War and Victory Medals (67765 Cpl., R.A.) extremely fine (3) £60-80

Horace Henry Gadd was born at Banstead on 31 December 1891. Serving with the 8th Brigade Royal Field Artillery, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 19 August 1914. A copied newspaper cutting states, ‘Corporal H. Gadd, R.F.A. whose parents live at Cambridge Grove, was home on leave on July 4th (1917), was married on the 8th, returned to France on the 14th and on the 24th he was badly gassed at Ypres, which was the 21st engagement in which he has been. His long record dates from the early days of the war, including the retreat from Mons. The long list of fights in which he has taken part also include the Marne, Festubert, La Basse, Givenchy, Messines, Hill 60, Ypres, Arras, and Wytschaete. This Penge soldier has certainly “done his bit.”’ Corporal Gadd died of Pneumonia on 24 November 1918, and was buried in Beckenham Cemetery. Sold with a folder containing copied research
