James Charters attested for the 10th (Scottish) Battalion, Liverpool Regiment on 5 August 1914 and was one of the original contingent who travelled to France aboard the S.S. Maidan in November 1914. He subsequently served with the 15th Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment.
