With the regiment he served in the Peninsular War, being present at the battles of Vittoria, Orthes and Toulouse - for which he was later awarded the Military General Service Medal with three clasps. Serving at Waterloo he received slight wounds to his head and hands, the regiment forming part of the 5th Brigade under Major-General Sir Colquhoun Grant. Elliott is listed in the Regimental History as being one of a number of soldiers who distinguished themselves in the Peninsula, the south of France or at Waterloo. For the last 1 year 60 days of his service he held the rank of Corporal.
