James Frederick Jones, who was born at Windsor, Berkshire, originally enlisted in the 4th Light Dragoons at Westminster in August 1841. Transferring to the 9th Lancers in April of the following year, he was subsequently present at Sobraon in the First Sikh War, at the crossing of the Chenab and the battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat in the Punjab 1848-49, and in the Lucknow operations of March 1858 - his discharge papers list at least six more actions that he was present at after Lucknow, among them the attack on Fort Roeya and the capture of Bareilly. Jones was finally discharged at Chatham in November 1861, as a result of a hernia.
