Seven: Henry Jackson, Merchant Navy

British War and Mercantile Marine Medals 1914-18
(Henry Jackson); 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Pacific Star; Italy Star; War Medal 1939-45, mounted as worn, the first officially renamed, good very fine and better (7) £60-80

Possibly the mounted awards of the Henry Jackson who was awarded the O.B.E. for services as Master of the M.V. Delphinula (London Gazette 1 January 1942), and the C.B.E. as Commodore of the Anglo-Saxon Petroleum fleet (London Gazette 1 January 1945).

The
Delphinula, a tanker, witnessed the famous Jervis Bay incident back in November 1940, when she formed part of convoy HX-84. Under cover of smoke, the merchantmen were ordered to scatter, while Captain Fegen and his courageous crew took on the German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer, an act of self-sacrifice that resulted in Fegen being awarded a posthumous V.C. Unlike several other vessels, the Delphinula, under Jackson’s command, escaped unscathed.
