The Society of British Artists (now the Royal Society of British Artists) was established in 1823 as an alternative body to the Royal Academy. Originally there were 27 members, among whom were Thomas Heaphy (1775-1835), Clarkson Stanfield (1793-1867) and David Roberts (1796-1864). Bi-annual exhibitions were staged in Suffolk street, Pall Mall
