James Anthony was appointed Ensign in the 40th Foot on 9 April 1809, becoming Lieutenant in April 1811. He was severely wounded at the storming of Badajoz, 6 April 1812, severely wounded at the battle of Toulouse, 10 April 1814, and wounded for a third time at the battle of Waterloo. Placed on half-pay on 18 November 1819, he was awarded a pension of seventy pounds per annum, commencing 11 April 1815, for wounds received at Badajoz, Toulouse and Waterloo.
