John Deveney was born in Ballymoney, co. Antrim, in 1786 and attested for the 23rd Regiment of Foot at Belfast on 10 September 1806. He served with the Regiment in the Peninsula, and during the Waterloo Campaign, 16-18 June 1815 in Captain Brown’s No. 4 Company, and was discharged to pension on 18 May 1826, after 21 years and 251 days’ service.
