John Herbert Humphreys was the youngest son of Owen and Mrs Humphreys of Cambridge Road, Bootle. He was educated at Bedford Road Council School, and on the outbreak of the Great War was working in the Liverpool offices of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board. He volunteered for active service in August 1914 and accompanied the original contingent of the Liverpool Scottish to France in November that year aboard the S.S.
Maidan. Sold with photocopied picture of recipient.
