Thomas Barnes was born in Romsey, Hampshire, in 1877 and attested for the Hampshire Regiment at Winchester on 17 January 1900, having previously served in the Regiment’s 1st Volunteer Battalion. He served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa from 16 March 1901 to 13 May 1902, and was discharged on 12 June 1902. Following the outbreak of the Great War he re-enlisted in the Wiltshire Regiment, and served with the 3rd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 19 July 1915.

Sold with a copied photographic image of the recipient taken during the Boer War; and copied attestation papers, medal roll extracts, and Medal Index card.
