John Sherwood Newman was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the East Yorkshire Regiment on 1 September 1914 and served with the 6th Battalion during the Great War in the Gallipoli theatre of War from 14 July 1915. He was killed in action on 7 August 1915, aged 21; he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey.
