Waterloo 1815 (William Develing, Gunner Royal Foot Artillery.) with original steel clip and later split ring suspension, edge bruising and contact marks, polished, good fine, the reverse better £1,000-£1,400

Provenance: Glendining’s, June 1915 (£2,8s.); Glendining’s, February 1932.

William Develing (also recorded as Devlin and Develin) was born in Co. Tyrone in 1787 and attested for the Royal Artillery at Glenoe, Co. Tyrone, on 1 October 1811. ‘He served abroad in Holland and France for 4 years and 11 months, and was present at the Battle of Waterloo; at the Storming of Bergen-op-Zoom; the taking of Starbrook, Mergiem, and Sandfleet [Sandvliet]; and at the Bombardment of the French Fleet in the Scheldt.’ (Service papers refer). He transferred to the Invalid Battalion on 1 January 1830, and was discharged at St. Mary’s, Scilly Isles, on 10 October 1848, aged 61, after 39 years and 10 days’ service.
