Thomas Yates was born in the Parish of Leigh, Lancaster, and attested for the Rifle Brigade at Liverpool on 26 July 1877. He embarked for India on 15 January 1879, and served in the Afghan campaign of 1878-79 (Medal), and in the Waziri Expedition of 1881, returning home in December 1883. He was discharged at Winchester on 27 July 1889.
