Herbert Vawdrey McWatters was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Army Service Corps from the Royal Military College on 15 September 1909 and was promoted Lieutenant on 15 December 1911. He served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 18 August 1914, and was promoted Captain on 1 September 1915, and appointed temporary Major. He saw further service with the Royal Army Service Corps in Waziristan 1921-24 (entitled to an India General Service Medal with clasp), and was confirmed in his Majority on 15 September 1925. He transferred to the Indian Army on 10 May 1927.
