Henry Martyn Slater was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery on 19 June 1877, and promoted Captain on 7 November 1885. He served with G/4, R.A. from November 1879 until the return of the battery to India, being present at the battle of Ahmed Khel and action of Arzu.
