Herbert Miller was born in Newington, London, in 1880 and attested for the Oxfordshire Light Infantry at Kingston-on-Thames on 4 November 1898. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 5 February 1900 to 5 March 1902, and thence in India until 25 January 1907. He transferred to the Army Reserve on 28 January 1907, and was discharged on 3 November 1910, after 12 years’ service.
