An ‘Immediate’ M.S.M. awarded to Sergeant W. Baker, 8th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, who was awarded the M.S.M. for his prompt actions in saving life, at Steenbeek, in March 1918

M.S.M. London Gazette 17 June 1918.
The original Recommendation states: ‘For his action at Steenbeek, March 1918. When the wagon carrying 15 men of No. 7 Platoon fell into the water, Lieutenant Wardroper and Corporal Barker [
sic] were conspicuous in assisting the men at once, showing great presence of mind, going to the water and between them rescued all the men in the wagon. The driver and firemen were pinned under the locomotive and drowned.’

William Baker attested for the Northumberland Fusiliers at Newcastle and served in the 8th Battalion during the Great War in the Balkan theatre of War from 19 July 1915. He was wounded in the leg at Gallipoli in September 1915; recovering, he subsequently served on the Western Front, and was transferred to Class ‘Z’ Army Reserve following the end of hostilities.
