William Coldwell was born in Philadelphia, United States of America, and attested for the Cheshire Regiment at Sheffield, Yorkshire, on 12 August 1892, having previously served in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Yorkshire Light Infantry. He served with the Cheshire Regiment in South Africa during the Boer War, and was discharged on 11 August 1913, after 21 years’ service. Following the outbreak of the Great War he re-enlisted into the South Lancashire Regiment on 24 September 1914, and after a spell in the Depot and then a Training Reserve Battalion, was posted to 9th Battalion, serving with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force from 1 January 1917 to 8 March 1919.
