John Hayward was born at St. Pancras, Middlesex, and attested there for the Middlesex Regiment. He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 8 June 1915, and was killed in action on 4 November 1915. He is buried at Y Farm Military Cemetery, Bois Grenier, France.
