William Barnard attested for the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, and served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 14 August 1914. He transferred to the Machine Gun Corps on 4 January 1916, and later served with the Royal Artillery.
