James Edwards was born in Wrexham, Denbighshire, in 1878 and attested there for the Imperial Yeomanry, having previously served with the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He served with the 29th Denbighshire) Company, 9th Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War, and died of enteric fever at Springfontein on 8 January 1902.
