John Graham was born in Longtown, Cumberland, on 10 January 1883 and joined the Sunderland Fire Brigade in 1907. He was awarded his Long Service Medal in 1931, and that same year was promoted to Sergeant. He retired with the rank of Superintendent in 1937, after 30 years’ service.
