John Adamson was born on 7 October 1886 and was commissioned Second Lieutenant, General List, on 14 July 1917, being posted to the Royal Flying Corps on 12 September 1917. He transferred to the Royal Air Force on its formation on 1 April 1918, and served as a S.E.5 pilot with 74 Squadron during the Great War on the Western Front. He was wounded by gun shot on 1 September 1918, and was admitted to hospital in Calais. He transferred to the Unemployed List on 5 February 1919.
