Eric Robert Howard Magnusson was born at Whakataki, Manawatu-Wanganui, North Island, New Zealand, on 19 January 1895. He volunteered for service in the Australian Naval Force on 8 June 1911, and commenced his engagement in the Royal Navy on 19 January 1913, serving as a Boy Second Class in H.M.S. Pioneer

Note: Only 77 men are recorded on the Great War Naval Medal rolls for the Australian Naval Force, all of whom were engaged into the Royal Navy under the terms of the Naval Agreement of 1903. Enlistment to the Australian Naval Force effectively became defunct with the establishment of the Royal Australian Navy in 1913.
